Home Insulation

What is Home Insulation & how does it work?

If your house isn’t fully insulated, having insulation installed will not only help keep your home warmer, but it could also help you save you money on your energy bills. Under the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) scheme, we are offering FREE home insulation to eligible customers.

.

Don’t worry if you don’t qualify, we have a range of finance options, including the Green Deal, that could help you finance energy saving improvements in your home.

.

Insulation helps stop heat escaping from the loft and walls of your home. You spend less warming your house up when you keep the heat in, so a well-insulated home can really lower your bills. There are many simple yet effective ways to insulate your home, which can significantly reduce heat loss while lowering your heating bills. Read on to find out how this can be done in every part of your house.

What types of home insulation is there?

At Ignite there are a few ways to insulate your home:

.

Roof & Loft Home Insulation

.

Heat rises, and in an uninsulated home, a quarter of heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is a simple and effective way to reduce heat loss and reduce your heating bills.Loft insulation is effective for at least 42 years and it should pay for itself many times over.

.

Cavity Wall Home Insulation

.

About a third of all the heat lost in an uninsulated home escapes through the walls.Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one. In winter, the colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home will escape into the surrounding air.

Home insulation can really lower your bills and make your house a home!

What else?

What else is there to know about home insulation?

.

Loft insulation is a thick material that’s rolled onto the floor of your loft. It acts like a blanket, helping to stop heat escaping through the roof.
– You could save up to £140 a year on energy.
– You could see the difference in your bills straightaway.
– It takes less than a day to install.

.

Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between your inside and outside walls. It helps stop heat escaping through the walls of your home.
– You could save up to £160 a year on energy.
– You could see the difference in your bills straightaway.
– It takes less than a day to install.

.

Insulation for tenants. Your home could still benefit from home insulation, if you privately rent your home.

.

“Do you need loft home insulation?”

.

YES

.

If your loft looks like this – all beams/floor showing, it’s not insulated yet – we can help!

.

MAYBE

.

If you can see your beams, your home might benefit from more insulation.

.

Loft insulation acts in the same way as a woolly hat. A woolly hat stops heat from your body escaping through the top of your head. Likewise, the heat in your home will rise but loft insulation will help prevent it all escaping through your roof.

.

Some quick facts:

.

  • Loft insulation usually takes a couple of hours to install. It is simply rolled out and laid flat across the loft floor, between and over the joists if they are visible.

.

“Do you need cavity wall home insulation?”

.

YES

.

If your walls looks like this, they are not insulated and we might be able to insulate them.

.

NO NEED

.

If your walls look like this, they’re already well insulated!

.

Cavity wall home insulation acts in the same way as your big coat you wear on a cold day. Filling the gap between the two external walls helps prevent warmth from escaping from your home in the same way your coat prevents heat escaping from your body.

.

Some quick facts:

.

  • It is generally suitable for properties built after the 1930s, where the external walls are made up of two layers with a small ‘cavity’ between them.
  • The insulation is installed by drilling small holes in the mortar between the bricks and then pumping in the insulation material. This will take a couple of hours. The holes are then filled back in.
